Youth United

What is Youth United?

Youth United (YU) is a Habitat for Humanity program that brings together community youth ages 5 -25 to raise money to partially sponsor a home and to help build it with and for a local family each year.  The youth are the leaders, planners, fundraisers, public relations specialists, and the builders. They work together to raise money and awareness, while youth ages 16-25 build the house (younger youth can work on site during the non-construction phases).  Most importantly, through this program youth help fulfill a family’s dream of having their own home.  It is the adventure of a lifetime!

The first YU house was built in 2006; it was the first Youth United house built in Minnesota!  In all, three YU houses have been built and dedicated, and our 4th house will start this spring, 2010.

Five Reasons to Join
 * Build a house from start to finish.
 * Develop leadership, social and construction skills.
 * Work with a diverse group and make new friends.
 * Make a difference in your community.
 * Make the dream of owning a home come true for a family.

How Can I get Involved?

Youth

  • Leadership:  YU offers several ways that you can gain leadership skills.  The YU steering committee sets up guidelines and timelines for the Youth United build.  It is also in charge of Recruitment, Education, Fundrainsing, Publicity, Construction Planning, and 15 & Under Involvement.  Join and learn the ropes of non-profit and community leadership!
  • Groups:  Sign up your youth group or organization to help contribute funds and build the YU house.  Have a great time serving together and help a family's dream of home ownership come true.
Adults
Do you have experience with fundraising, construction, public relations, etc, or maybe you just want to be a part of the great YU adventure?  We need  adults to be involved in all levels of the program as mentors.  So sign up for a committee or a special project or whatever looks interesting to you.
Can’t spare an extra minute?  Perhaps you could spare some change?  To make a donation to the YOUTH United program, please contact us at 507-252-0849 ext. 4 or volmgr@rahh.org

Wanted:  Youth United Work Crews

WhatThe Rochester Area Habitat for Humanity needs work teams of youth and adults to help build the next annual Youth United house.  No construction experience is necessary.  To ensure a safe and efficient construction site there will be a skilled house builder to oversee the building process and to make certain that all work groups understand assigned tasks and work safely as a group.

WhoYouth 16-25 will build.  Anyone over 25 can serve as an adult advisor.

WhenWork days will be every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm (half-day shifts can be available upon request) starting immediately.  A more detailed work schedule is available upon request.

How:

  Requirements

  1. Any group that has four or more youth must have an adult advisor.   Individuals can be assigned to groups.
  2. All work days have to be reserved in advanced.  This way we can ensure that we have enough work for all volunteers to do.
  3. Youth 18 and under must have a waiver of release signed by their parents and turned in before they will be able to build.

To get the days of your choice, contact us today at 507-252-0849 ext. 4 or email us at volmgr@rahh.org
