YOUTH United

What is YOUTH United?

Youth United (YU) is a Habitat for Humanity program that brings together community youth ages 5-25 to fully sponsor and build a home with a local family. The youth are the leaders, planners, fundraisers, public relations specialists and builders. They work together to raise money and awareness, while youth ages 16-25 build the house (younger youth can work on site during the non-construction phases).  Most importantly, through this program youth help fulfill a family’s dream of having their own home. It is the adventure of a lifetime!

A YU house will cost approximately $70,000 to complete.  We built our first YU house in 2006; it was the first in Minnesota!  We start our 2nd house in June of 2007 and finish it later in 2007.

The first YU house - Complete and dedicated October, 2006

. Join our award-winning YU Steering Committee.  Meetings are held every 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month at 5:00 pm at the Habitat office.

Five Reasons to Join

* Build a house from start to finish.
* Develop leadership, social and construction skills.
* Work with a diverse group and make new friends.
* Make a difference in your community.
* Make the dream of owning a home come true for a family.

How can I get involved?

Youth

  • Leadership:  YU offers several ways that you can gain leadership skills.  The YU program is set up with six different committees that you can join to learn the ropes of non-profit and community leadership.  The committees are YU Steering Committee, Recruitment and Education, Fundraising, Publicity, Construction Scheduling, and 15 & Under Involvement.  Read more about the committees.
  • Groups:  Sign up your youth group or organization to help contribute funds and build the YU house.  Have a great time serving together and help a family's dream of hoe ownership come true.
Adults
Do you have experience with fundraising, construction, public relations, etc, or maybe you just want    to be a part of the great YU adventure?  We need  adults to be involved in all levels of the program as mentors.  So sign up for a committee or a special project or whatever looks interesting to you.
Can’t spare an extra minute?  Perhaps you could spare some change?  To make a donation to the YOUTH United program, please contact Patricia at 507-252-0849 ext. 4 or volmgr@rahh.org.

Wanted:  Youth United Work Crews

What
The Rochester Area Habitat for Humanity needs work teams of youth and adults to help build the first annual Youth United house.  No construction experience is necessary.  To ensure a safe and efficient construction site there will be a skilled house builder to oversee the building process and to make certain that all work groups understand assigned tasks and to work safely as a group.

Who:
Youth 16-25 will build.  Anyone over 25 can serve as an adult advisor.

When:
Work days will be every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm (half-day shifts can be available upon request) starting immediately.  More detailed work schedule available upon request.

Where:
The Youth United house will be built in the Rose Harbor area located in Southeast Rochester.

How:
Requirements

  1. Any group that has four youth or more must have an adult advisor.  Individuals can be assigned to groups.
  2. All work days have to be reserved in advanced.  This way we can ensure that we have enough work for all volunteers to do.
  3. Youth 18 and under must have a waiver of release signed by their parents and turned in before they will be able to build.
Contact Patricia today to get the day/s of your choice at 507-252-0849 ext. 4 or email volmgr@rahh.org.
